Could your company change our energy landscape forever? Are you helping to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions while helping to meet the energy needs of the 21st century and beyond? Or rolling out an innovation that will dramatically reduce the use of water or any other natural resource?
The Bloomberg New Energy Pioneers award is designed to identify, recognise and integrate potential game-changers in the field of clean technology and innovation. Each year 10 companies are selected by a panel of industry experts comprising senior representatives from academia, corporations, utilities and technology incubators and Bloomberg New Energy Finance clean energy technology experts, against our comprehensive criteria.
Winners are unveiled at the annual Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit, the leading discussion forum for decision-makers in clean energy and the carbon markets. Serving as the premier launch platform, the Summit comprises a dedicated programme of events showcasing winning companies, interviews, profiling in Bloomberg T.V and an exclusive New Energy Pioneers dinner with the industry’s key decision-makers and investors. Winners are likely to attract considerable press and media coverage.
New Energy Pioneers have innovative, proven technologies, robust business models, the ability to demonstrate traction and momentum in their activities, and the potential for global scale.
Our Pioneers are normally less than 10 years old, and have annual sales up to $20m. They will generally be privately held, often with venture capital investors. They may be quoted, though more likely on a venture or junior exchange, and they will generally not be part of larger conglomerates, although exceptions may be made. Up to 10 Pioneers will be selected each year, and winners are expected to attend the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit.
- You can nominate your own company
- Venture investors are invited to nominate any portfolio companies they feel meet the criteria

Applicants are put through their paces. The process is rigorous, and can take up to several months to complete – but the rewards are well worth the hard work. Judging is undertaken by a panel of industry experts from, academia, corporations, utilities and technology incubators against our comprehensive criteria. Bloomberg New Energy Finance technology experts advise the panel through the assessment stages.

Potential scale »
What is the scale of the opportunity being addressed? Is it a nice niche but of limited scale? Will it transform a major industry, or could it change the world for everyone? Is your business local or can it be rolled out in multiple geographical markets? Will it spawn a whole ecosystem of new supporting businesses?
The transformation required in the world’s energy and resource infrastructure is on such a scale, so thinking big beats thinking small.
Innovation »
How original is your technology or business model? Is it a ground-breaking modification of what others are doing, or is it something completely new? Is your technology patented or otherwise protected from being copied? Do you have a plan to stay ahead of the game?
Pioneers do not have to be technology companies, but they do have to be doing something new and different.
Momentum »
Can you demonstrate that you are establishing strong traction? Are you still funded by R&D grants or are you making real commercial sales? Do you have strong industry partnerships in place? Have you established distribution channels to take your product or service to market? Can you demonstrate meaningful and consistently growing sales? Has your executive team done this before?
To break the mould your ideas have to compete in the marketplace and win.
